How To Install Monit Monitoring Tool on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS


In this tutorial we will show you how to install and configure Monit Monitoring Tool on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS server. Monit is tool to monitor process running in your linux or unix operating system , it can do automatically a task and can send alert to your email. Using Monit you also can open in your web browser to control and monitor your system. You can assign task based what you need using monit, for example if a certain service fails the check, Monit can alert or do something about it like restarting the service.

For this tutorial we will give you example how to monitor apache process.


This article assumes you have at least basic knowledge of linux, know how to use the shell, root user or non-root user account with sudo privileges set up on your server.

Step 1 – Update repositories list

First we need to update repository database using these command below

Step 2 – Install monit

Step 3 – Configure Monit monitoring tool

Configure monit config using nano or text editor you like

Edit your config like these lines below

The config above we will set the user admin with password monit

Once you’ve configured it, you need to start the monit service to reload the new configuration settings

Step 4 – Configure Monit to monitor apache process

Once the main config is completed, we will configure monit to monitor apache service. To do this , we need create additional file located in /etc/monit.d/ directory.

We will create new file using nano

Insert your config file like these lines below

After adding required services in monit monitoring configuration file, Use the below command to verify syntax of file:

Finally restart the monit service

Step 5 – Accessing Monit web interface

You can access monit web intrafce on HTTP port 2812 by default. Open your favorite browser and navigate to or http://server-ip:2812 and and then enter the credentials you created in conf above.
