How to speed up apt-get on Ubuntu Linux 16.04 LTS server with apt-fast

In this tutorial we will show you how to speed up apt-get on Ubuntu Linux 16.04 LTS server with apt-fast. Like apt-get, apt-fast can use to install and remove package on ubuntu or debian linux based. Basically apt-get using single connection, but if we use apt-fast we can using multiple connections to make faster download package.

Prerequisites

This article assumes you have at least basic knowledge of linux, know how to use the shell, root user or non-root user account with sudo privileges set up on your server.

Step 1 – Install apt-fast

We need to add ppa repository using the following command below

Update repository list

Install apt-fast application

Step 2 – Configuration

After installation success, you will be prompted as follows ( please enter a value between 5 and 16 )

apt-fast max connection

And chose yes

apt-fast-confirmation-box

Please note , you can edit later in this file configuration

Step 3 – How to use

apt-fast command have similar syntax as apt-get

Below are some example command usage using apt-fast

To retrieve new lists of packages

To perform an upgrade

To perform distribution upgrade (release or force kernel upgrade)

To install new packages, in this example we will install package name nginx :

To remove packages, in this example we will remove nginx package :

To remove packages and its config files too, in this example we will remove nginx package :

To remove automatically all unused packages

To Download source archives

To erase downloaded archive files

To erase old downloaded archive files

To verify that there are no broken dependencies

To download the binary package into the current directory, in this example we will download nginx package binary

Congratulations,  you have successfully install apt-fast in ubuntu 16.06 to speed up apt-get package download.

apt-fast has syntax almost same as apt-get command, also please note that this tools it is for fast network connections. If you have a slow connection to the Internet, you are not going to benefit by this tool.
